"We are the Social Network"
Its not Facebook that changed the way we communicate, its the people. Its the community that makes a social-network what it is. For some reason, people think Facebook is some sort of huge disgusting living creature that took over our lives. But lets take a couple steps back and see what it really is….
Before Facebook there was Myspace, Friendster, Xanga, Whimit, Meetspot, and …. oh shit! …Remember AOL? These are all companies that tried and succeeded the same exact thing that Facebook did, but never lasted forever. Remember those CD’s you used to get in the mail from AOL? And you automatically threw them away. They were trying to integrating themselves into your life, and it made them seem unstoppable! But look what happened…AOL is pretty much a dead company now. Facebook did the same thing but in a new way… Now you go to any website, and you will see the Facebook logo repeated at least twice somewhere on the page. “Sign in With Facebook!” “Share this On Facebook!” They integrated themselves into everything and they are making themselves seem permanent.
All of these social networks have the same goal in mind….. to create an online community thats seems like its going to last forever, and incorporate it into our lives as much as possible. These websites are nothing other than “hang-out spots,” and the community decides, or is tricked into deciding where to hang out next. Facebook just did it best and made it huge; twice the size of America huge! But just because it completely dominated the online social-networking market, doesn’t mean its going to last forever. Eventually it will be replaced by a new “hang-out spot.” Its only a matter of time until a better service comes along. Facebook isn’t the social network, we are.
